The international dimension of Catalan organisations
The contribution Catalonia makes to the world, despite not being a state in its own right, is both a right and a responsibility of the local association movement. Many of the associations participate in such areas as culture, education, sport, human rights and sustainable development, working in conjunction with other organisations across the globe and establishing joint projects.
This international presence, featuring both associations and people, is a positive step which needs to be recognised, spread and supported as it raises awareness of Catalonia and its participation on the world stage.
Being a member of an international organisation
Certain international organisations, despite the fact they are non-governmental, apply the criterion that their full members must correspond to states; this discriminates against organisations operating in stateless nations.
The fact that Catalonia is a stateless nation means that a great deal of Catalan organisations have difficulties finding recognition as full members in their corresponding international sectors. Despite this, however, several Catalan bodies have managed to make their voices heard and participate actively in international organisations.
